Torsion springs sit horizontally above the door on a shaft and store energy by twisting. They offer smoother, more balanced operation and longer lifespan—typically 15,000–20,000 cycles—but are dangerous to handle without proper tools and training 

Extension springs, mounted lengthwise along the door tracks, expand and contract to counterbalance the door. They’re simpler and cheaper but less durable  and can be hazardous if safety cables are missing
